The best muscle building exercises are movements that allow the body to generate a high intensity of effort to initiate an adaptive response from muscle cells. It means the best muscle building exercises for any muscle group are multi-joint movements. These require two or more different muscle groups to work together allowing more weight to be used.

A good example is the bench press, regarded as the best chest building exercise of all. This mass building exercise places secondary stress on the shoulder and triceps muscle groups but the majority of the stress is placed on the chest muscles.

 

Why are they the best muscle building exercises?

The heavy load forces the chest muscle to recruit as many cells as possible to move the weight. The more cells under stress the better the muscle stimulation and better growth!

All multi-joint movements are the best muscle building exercises because of the potential to generate higher levels of effort. Intense effort is the key to muscle building it stresses muscles by forcing the cells to breakdown very rapidly, carbohydrate stores are mobilized rapidly for energy and protein filaments are shattered.

Every movement results in a slight breakdown of molecules inside muscle cells. Most movements we make such as walking or running only place a small amount of stress on muscle cells so the rate of breakdown is slow, sleep and food intake is enough to easily recover the cells back to their normal state.  

If muscles contract at maximal force ( like heavy weight training ) the rate of breakdown increases dramatically, the central nervous system assesses the stress and triggers an adaptive response. Muscle cells must adapt because if the same level of stress is experienced again they are stronger to cope with it better. The cells adapt by laying down more protein molecules between the workouts. The side effect of more protein in cells is stronger, bigger muscles.
