Genetic potential for building muscle

Our potential for building muscle is determined by our genes. There are a few genetic factors that make a difference in how well we build muscle. The number of muscle cells, the length of muscle bellies, our muscle fibre arrangement and muscle cell types all combine to make up our overall genetic potential for building muscle. No matter how much training is done we cannot override our genetic predisposition we can only make the most of what we have!

The main genetic factor for muscle building is the number of cells present in each muscle. Some people naturally possess more muscle cells than others which gives an advantage in building muscle size and strength.

For example, if Mr Small has 1000 cells in his biceps muscle but Mr Big has 2000 cells then Mr Big will have naturally bigger biceps because more cells take up more space. He also has the potential for great strength too. If he used all his muscle cells to curl a weight he could potentially curl more as Mr small only has half the number of cells to use. Imagine 5 men attempting to pull a huge vehicle but they cannot pull it. Then 10 men attempt to pull it and succeed, well Mr Big just has more men in his biceps!

Mr Big also has the potential to gain much more muscle size than Mr Small. If both men doubled the size of all their cells Mr Big would gain more volume because he possesses many more cells.

Never compare yourself to others!

No matter how genetics determines your potential to build muscle never compare yourself to others. It can be easy to believe others are doing the correct training or taking the right supplements if they seem to growing quickly, its especially tempting to listen to them if your progress has waned lately. The simple fact is they probably have better genetic potential allowing them to gain muscle no matter what training program they follow.

If you have low genetic potential you'll never develop a 60 inch chest or 20 inch arms, however you still have the physical ability to produce fantastic chest and arm musculature, with bulging biceps, immense triceps and veins like steel cables bursting just under the skin.

There are some top body builders who only have 15 inch arms. Remember its not just about the physical size its about development, taking what you have been given to the extreme in muscular development!
