What to do
when progress starts to slow
Completely change the normal workout,
and select exercises which will challenge the muscle. As muscles become accustomed to a regular workout
they need to be shocked into action once more. Yes doing a completely
different routine for a few workouts can be a great way to boost progress
again, but sometimes I used to not even bother going to the gym I would go
ice-skating or running, basically something endurance-based and entirely different. Whatever activity or exercise is chosen will depend on the
situation. For example, if you have become over-trained it may not be best
to do weights at all, maybe not even any activity, just resting for a week
may be best. If you've got tons of energy, and strength has not reduced but you
can't seem to gain any more, then maybe a completely different weights
routine will help. The
point to remember is first assess if you're in an over-trained state. Then
if you are, rest for a week and start back gradually. If you're sure
everything is ok just change to some other activity according to how you
feel. Maybe re-challenge the body with something completely new. I once
started sprinting to help boost my leg development, I was training hard on
squats but got to the stage where I didn't experience
D.O.M.S (slight soreness) anymore. I
felt that the heavy squats were simply maintaining current leg development
and NOT helping build new muscle. Believe me sprinting can be as intense as
squats, I knew this when I got up next day and my legs were as stiff as
wood!
