Stretching for Lower Back Muscles
This stretch is great for warming up and loosening the lower back and around the spine. An ideal stretch to warm up before doing squats or dead lifts. Take your time when doing the lower back stretch, learn to breath deeply and try to relax the muscle you are stretching.
How to stretch the Lower Back * Start by sitting on a strong, secure chair. Lift your arms up in front of you and slowly bend down and gradually reach for your feet. Try to feel for the stretch in the lower back area while holding this position for about 20 seconds. If this is easy you can try positioning the feet further away at the start of the stretch. Bending over with your feet further away will cause more stretch in the whole back. Take care if you have problems with your back, if in doubt don't try this stretch!
* You should always perform a stretch under the guidance of a qualified instructor. Remember it's much safer to under stretch than to overstretch. Never overstretch a muscle during a warm up. If you feel pain or discomfort at any stage during a stretch then stop the stretch immediately!
