Stretch for Shoulders & Upper Back

This is a simple stretch to loosen the upper back and shoulder area, particularly the back of the shoulders. It is a good stretch to do before rowing exercises or any pulling movements. You have to stretch one shoulder at a time so its not the quickest stretch to do but it should form part of any stretching routine for the upper body.

Stretching back of shoulder muscles

How to Stretch the Shoulder Muscles  *

Sit or stand with your arms relaxed by your sides. Lift your left arm and draw it towards your right shoulder as if you're going to brush some hair off the back of your right shoulder. Now hold your left elbow with your right hand, and keeping the left arm relaxed, gently pull the elbow inwards a little. It wont matter if your arm is held straight or bent partly around the neck. Hold this stretch for 20 - 30 seconds. Now repeat for the right shoulder.

You should try not to twist the torso or make any sudden jerks. Again don't force the stretch!

* You should always perform a stretch under the guidance of a qualified instructor. Remember it's much safer to under stretch than to overstretch. Never overstretch a muscle during a warm up. If you feel pain or discomfort at any stage during a stretch then stop the stretch immediately!
