Stretch for Upper Back Muscles

The lat stretch loosens up the upper back and Latissimus muscles. It helps create freer movement in the shoulder joint. The lat stretch should always be done before performing any weights rowing exercise. It is also a very good stretch for the upper body warm up routine. The lat stretch can be more effective with good breathing technique, try to breath deeply and concentrate on relaxing the muscles of the upper back.

Stretching the upper back muscles

How to Stretch the Upper Back Lat Muscles *

You can stand or sit to do this stretch. Start by interlacing your fingers, then turn the palms upward above your head as you slowly straighten your arms. I find it easier to arch my lower back slightly as my arms are nearly straight. Once you feel a slight stretch in the arms, shoulders or upper back the hold the position for 20 seconds.

Again don't force anything and try not to hold your breath when stretching.

* You should always perform a stretch under the guidance of a qualified instructor. Remember it's much safer to under stretch than to overstretch. Never overstretch muscles during a warm up. If you feel pain or discomfort at any stage during a stretch then stop the stretch immediately!
