Training harder to build muscle quick

There's only one way to build muscle faster, train harder!

 

 

Many weight trainers make the mistake of working out for longer in the belief that this is how to train harder. In fact the complete opposite is true, a shorter workout has the potential for more intensity. When I trained new people in muscle building the most difficult part was convincing the bodybuilder that doing a half-hour workout of basic exercises would produce better gains in muscle.

Remember our muscles can only hold a certain amount of carbs (glycogen) and after glycogen levels become low it is impossible to train hard enough to stimulate muscle growth. Continuing to train with drained glycogen levels becomes a waste of time, in fact it may become counterproductive because more energy is being wasted, energy which could be better used during the anabolic (building up) phase.

There are three main ways an exercise can be made harder:

  1. Use a heavier weight for the same rep range

  2. Do more reps with the same weight

  3. Gradually decrease the rest intervals between sets

It would be best to choose only one method for each workout. The most effective method for building muscle mass is by increasing the weight gradually for all exercises but still attempt to keep the same reps, only increase weight once rep range has been reached. This is simple strength building which will build solid muscle. There is a direct relationship between muscular strength and muscle size, if a muscle becomes stronger it WILL be bigger.
